Smaller crabs have thinner shells and also less due to the fact they are smaller. The crab population is measured prior to the start of the harvest season and the quotas are set based on those survey results. The crab fishermen are unhappy on two fronts. They pointed out that water temperatures are 5-6 degrees warmer this year, which makes for a more robust crab population. Many were filling their quotas in just 3 or 4 days of fishing. They are very unhappy with the higher prices (even though they get paid more per pound). Those higher prices result in crab being taken off of restaurant menus, thereby reducing demand.Terry Gruggenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11368205951195757323noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664370589552058575.post-15190980615439362182012-04-14T11:40:53.518-05:002012-04-14T11:40:53.518-05:00Was the reduced harvest implemented to ensure a su...Was the reduced harvest implemented to ensure a sustainable population, or for another reason?Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03547147761890249953noreply@blogger.com
